Instructions
Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, swirling occasionally, until it smells nutty and has golden-brown specks at the bottom. Pour into a bowl and let cool for 10 minutes.
Tip: Brown butter adds a deep, toffee-like flavor that sets these apart from every other recipe. Don't skip this step.
Whisk both sugars into the cooled brown butter until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla, whisking until the mixture is thick and slightly pale.
Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Don't overmix.
Scoop dough into balls (about 2 tablespoons each) onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Chill for 30 minutes if possible.
Bake at 375F for 10-12 minutes until the edges are golden but the centers still look slightly underdone. Sprinkle with flaky salt. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes.
