Place a scoop of vanilla gelato into a small glass or espresso cup.

Pull a fresh shot of espresso (or use a stovetop moka pot for strong coffee).

Tip: The espresso must be hot and the gelato must be frozen solid. The temperature contrast is the entire point of this dessert.

Pour the hot espresso directly over the gelato. Serve immediately with a spoon and an optional amaretti cookie on the side.
